Hastings removals, steps and all
Hastings is the hardest town in the county to move furniture around, and we would rather say so than pretend. Cliffs on two sides, an Old Town built for carts, seafront flats above shops, and estates on the ridge behind. All of it doable — none of it standard.
The geography here is unusually decisive. The town is wedged between two hills with a valley running up the middle, and the housing follows that shape. What sort of move you get depends almost entirely on which slope you are on.
The parts of town, and what they involve
The Old Town
All Saints Street, the High Street, the passages between them, and the cottages running up the Bourne. Nothing large stands here for long. We park where a Luton legally can, shuttle with a smaller van, and use more hands. On a handful of properties above the East Hill lift, the only route in is steps — we will tell you that before you book, not after.
West Hill and the town centre
Victorian terraces on steep streets, with on-street parking that is full by eight in the morning. The gradient matters more than the width here. Anything on castors gets strapped.
St Leonards
Flats above shops on Norman Road and Kings Road, converted seafront houses on the Marina and Warrior Square, and the residential streets behind at Silverhill and Bohemia. The recurring question is which floor and whether the communal door opens wide enough for a three-seater — often it does not, and the sofa comes apart or goes through a window.
Ore, Hollington and the ridge estates
Postwar semis and later estate housing with driveways and space. Straightforward loading, long carry from the road on a few of the hillier cul-de-sacs.
Getting out of Hastings
The A21 north through Battle is the main road out, and it is single carriageway for a long stretch with limited overtaking. The A259 west along the coast to Bexhill and Eastbourne is slow but reliable. If you are heading for the M25 or beyond, the first hour is the A21 before anything speeds up. That gets built into the plan for longer household moves.

Hastings questions
How do you move anything out of the Old Town?
Slowly, and with more people than the volume suggests. All Saints Street and the Bourne side have no room for a Luton to stand, so we shuttle with a smaller vehicle from the nearest spot that takes one. Some properties on the cliff side are steps only.
Are the hills really a problem?
They change the plan rather than stopping it. West Hill and the roads up towards Ore are steep enough that a fully loaded vehicle has to be thought about, and in frost we will move the start time rather than risk it.
Do you cover St Leonards as well?
Yes — Norman Road, Kings Road, the Marina, Silverhill and Bohemia. St Leonards is mostly flats above shops and converted seafront houses, which means stairs and narrow street doors more often than not.
Can you do a studio flat with almost nothing in it?
Yes, that is a man and van job. Hastings has a lot of them and they are quick when the floor and the parking are known in advance.
